I think I have the short block at a point now that I can bag it and take it to the machine shop. I cleaned up the block as best as I could. I used dawn dish soap and a scouring pad to clean up the oil pan area of the block and the painted areas of the block. After spending about an hour and a half cleaning the block I put WD-40 everywhere on the block, just for good measure.
While cleaning up the short block I noticed some strange marks on the inside of cylinders 1 and 7. The markings are dark and can actually be felt. They did not clean up or clear when I used the scouring pad so I don't know what those marks mean, hopefully nothing serious but I won't know till the machine shop does their voodoo.
While I had some free time I also thought I would take a closer look at the C4 transmission. I thought I could seperate the bell housing from the case without disturbing the rest of the transmission. Well after unbolting the bell housing and then pulling, the transmission internals went external...or as much that could, did. So I changed my plans and put back what I could. I had planned on taking the transmission the transmission shop anyways...

27 May 2016 - Engine tear down
Received the valvetrain organizer today from Jegs. So I was able to remove and stow the valvetrain hardware in the tray and then remove the intake and cylinder heads.

Just removed the rockers/pushrods |
Valvetrain hardware in the organizer tray. Had to modify the tray...these rockers have a metal pedestal that covers the mounting boss for each intake/exhaust rocker pair. |

27 May 2016 - Transmission work stand/cart
Thinking about getting an engine stand and use that to work on the transmission...

26 May 2016 - Received replacement Idler Arm assembly
Today I received the idler arm assembly from West Coast Classic Cougars. Won't be able to install that just yet.
Yesterday I ordered a valvtrain organizer tray from Jegs. I thought I might try to be a bit more organized while working on the engine/transmission. The part should be here on the 27 May 2016.
Continued with dissassembly of the engine. Loosened all of the rockers and studs. Removed the intake manifold bolts and bagged and tagged them. Tomorrow I will start with the removal of the valvetrain hardware and if I have time, remove the cylinder heads.
Also cleaned up the transmission crossmember and bolts/nuts.

24 May 2016 - Engine installed on engine stand
Put the engine on the engine stand today. Had to re-arrange the garage to get that done. Still need to come up with a better short term solution for storing the transmission. Might put it on the hand truck with the wood cradle, will look into that tomorrow.

23 May 2016 - Engine & Transmission seperated
Put together a small wood cradle to hold the transmission temporarily. After doing that went ahead and seperated the engine/transmission and put the transmission in the cradle and left the engine on the engine hoist.
Right now the engine is ready to be put on the engine stand. Have to re-arrange the garage to get the engine on the stand....hopefully tomorrow it is not raining.

Heres a part number on the pump housing... |
Looked all over the torque converter but could not find any part number. Need to get bolt spacing dimensions I guess to know which type of converter that is... |
Moments before the flexplate is removed... |
Removed the flexplate and turned it over to get the part number. It was easier to remove the flexplate than I thought it would be... |

22 May 2016 - Notes
NOTES:
Pulled the engine/transmission today. Engine is currently hanging from the engine hoist, should be okay to do that....will check on that in a bit to make sure.
The transmission cross member is still under the car, as is the mounting hardware for that. Also the bolts/nuts for the engine mounts are still on the top area of the engine bay.
Really need to get another load leveler...current one seems a bit dodgey. Took longer to get that engine assembly out than it should have...
