25 Sept 2019

Since replacing the resistor wire for the coil, there has not been anymore sudden shutdowns.  The resistor wire is still part of the wiring harness, and will be removed completely this weekend.

21 Sept 2019 - Ignition shutdown cont'd

21 Sept 2019

Cleaned up the wiring for the ignition switch to coil wiring.  Looks much better and should be out of harms way.

20 Sept 2019
I have been driving the car this entire week without any engine shutdowns/cut outs.  So I am going to say that the problem was the pink resistor wire that goes to the ignition coil + terminal.

Tomorrow I will route the wire for a final installation, and cover that wire with plastic tubing and secure it.

18 Sept 2019 - engine bay wiring

I noticed that the battery terminal of the cable that runs from the negative battery post to the engine was damaged and would not securely tighten.  Replaced that cable today.

18 Sept 2019 - Ignition shutdown cont'd

I have been driving the car routinely for two days now and have not had any shutdown issues.  Its starting to look like the ignition wire that I replaced was the problem, but I will continue to drive and see.

15 Sept 2019 - Ignition system - intermittent shutdown - cont'd

Second test drive today.  No issues.  Will continue to monitor.  Went ahead and installed dash and panels.

Took the car for a 15 minute test drive around town and outskirts of town with no issues( means nothing at this point).  Still need to drive to verify if the fix is good.

14 Sept 2019 - Ignition system - intermittent shutdown

I removed the resistor wire from the ignition switch connector tucked it out of the way and capped off the other end in the engine bay.  So I then ran a 14 gauge wire from the msd keyswitch wire connection to the ignition switch connector.  I had to remove the female terminal from the connector, desolder the two wires(one was the resistor wire), then resolder the red wire with yellow stripe and the new replacement red wire from the msd keyed ignition switch connector.  So I have yet to test the setup now, will do that tomorrow.

The arrow is pointing at the terminal that I removed from the socket.  I then carefully desoldered the pink resistor wire and completely removed it from the ignition coil circuit/harness.  I installed a 14 gauge red wire and soldered that to the terminal and ran the wire through the wiring harness and firewal and connected it to the MSD 6 coil wire.

1 Sept 2019 - Dash area electronics

Had a chance to change out the ignition switch today.  The one I removed had a loose connection to the wiring loom connector.  The replacement fits better.  I'll test it tomorrow.

While the instrument panel was out, I replaced the stock light diffusers with red diffusers.  I didn't pay attention to how many were required when I was purchasing replacements, so I have to order another kit to completely replace the diffusers.

I also replaced the instrument voltage requlator with a solid state unit.

I replaced the K7 turn signal relay with a solid state unit.

So tomorrow I will install the battery and test these latest changes.  I am hoping that the intermittent shutdowns will now be resolved since the ignition switch has been replaced.
